Position for Project Archaeological Metals Objects Conservator

The Palace of Nestor Excavation Project seeks project archaeological metals conservators to work in Pylos, Greece for two periods, from February 2 - March 26, 2023 and May 15 – July 15, 2023.
The Palace of Nestor Excavation is an ongoing archaeological dig sponsored by the Department of Classics, University of Cincinnati, that operates in Southwestern Greece. The Palace of Nestor is a Late Bronze Age (Mycenaean) site located near modern-day Pylos. In 2015 the team uncovered the unlooted grave of a Mycenaean warrior known as the Griffin Warrior (www.griffinwarrior.org). In 2018 the team began the excavation of two monumental beehive tombs (tholos tombs), which is still in progress.
The focus of the contract is on the metals from the grave of the Griffin Warrior. The conservator, after consultation with project directors, carries out the examination, research and treatment of metal objects associated with the dig. Tasks include, but are not limited to, conservation, photography, and documentation of archaeological finds; on-site object conservation as needed; data entry and management; and overseeing the storage and packaging of objects.
The conservator reports to the co-director of the project, Sharon Stocker (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharon_Stocker).
Qualifications:
Experience with archaeological conservation and excavation
Experience conserving archaeological metals
Good English written and verbal communication skills
Computer skills, primarily MAC
Familiarity with scientific instrumentation
Experience with removal of objects from archaeological contexts
Ability to work independently and in a group
Salary and Benefits:
Salary is a maximum of $2400 gross per month based on experience; in addition, the conservator receives housing in an apartment in Pylos, some meals, and shared use of an automobile for local transport. Medical insurance is not included.
Requirements:
MS or MA in Conservation and a minimum of one year of experience in objects conservation
