The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or are currently contributing to British history and culture; the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. With around 2 million visitors each year and a strong national and international presence through touring exhibitions and special projects, the Gallery is one of the country's most important and popular galleries.
£29,500 per annum
Full time, 35 hours per week
Fixed term contract for one year
This is an exciting time to join the Gallery as Frame Conservator. The postholder will primarily focus on delivery of the Inspiring People project, a comprehensive re-presentation of the Collection in a refurbished and transformed building. They will also be supporting frame conservation planning and treatments ahead of the installation and redisplay.
To be considered for this position, you will need to have a qualification in the conservation of frames or have equivalent experience within a Gallery or Museum setting. In addition to frame conservation, you will need to be familiar with conservation principles of other media, including paintings and paper. You will also need to have previous experience of couriering and the movement of artworks.
The postholder will be required to work both independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues within the Conservation department in order to meet key timescales. They will therefore need to have demonstrable organisational and planning skills in order to prioritise projects to meet agreed deadlines. The successful candidate will need to have excellent written skills, as they will be required to produce clear and accurate documentation.
The postholder will need to have good working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, digital photography and image management databases and good knowledge and application of COSHH and Health & Safety guidelines.
